Lakeland Interpretive Center and Regional Leisure Complex

The Lakeland Interpretive Center and Regional Leisure Complex represents a community vision for the future. That vision is to construct and operate a unique multi-use Complex for discovery, participation and appreciation of Lac La Biche and Lakeland region’s rich natural and historical heritage, its distinctive and multi-cultured lifestyle and its promising future.

The Complex

What is it? A bold, innovative and exciting facility that will provide interpretive and educational programs, community services, social and leisure space, indoor sports and retail services.

Why is the complex unique? The 40,032 sq. ft. complex has been designed on two levels with the main level housing interpretive displays, exhibit galleries, tea room and gift shop, meeting rooms and a large multi-functional banquet and theatre space. The lower level is devoted to sports and leisure program space, a playschool, and youth centre.

Programs and services. Visitors will be as diverse as the wide array of opportunities and services offered. Visit the library, book a camping spot, attend meetings and trade seminars. Avast number of exhibits, short presentations and specially staged events will also be available.

Key interpretive features. Over 9,000 sq. ft. of interpretive display modules, hanging displays and photographic collections will set the stage for both informal viewing and informative programs on the main themes of the Complex.

Where is it? The Complex will be built onto the historic McArthur Place Cultural and Civic Center located along the Lac La Biche water -front in the Town of Lac La Biche.


Interpretive Features

The Lakeland Interpretive Centre will highlight the rich history of the Lakeland region amid the breathtaking beauty of over 200 scenic lakes. Displays throughout the Complex will feature the “Boreal Forest and Lakes as a Dynamic Ecosystem”, “Managing a Legacy”, and, “People and the Forest”.

Displays will depict the past through natural history, native peoples, early explorers, early settlement, and industrialization. The present will be depicted through forest management, planning, reforestation, agriculture, oil and gas, recreation, and hunting, fishing, and trapping. Thefuture will be depicted through new research and development, environmental practice, and future forest concepts.

For educators and scientists the Complex will represent a scientific staging ground for studying the Boreal Forest region and a unique land of lakes and forests that is not duplicated elsewhere. Local teachers will have an exciting new classroom for students.


Recreational and Social

This exciting initiative will blend indoor recreational pursuits, community services, and social and leisure activities under one roof. As a multi-use regional facility it will improve and expand upon existing facilities to serve the active regional market. Learn, share and grow as an individual or as a group through a multitude of recreational activities, social happenings and events.

For town and regional residents, the Complex will almost become a daily stop. Visit the library, do civic business, book a camping spot or tickets for a special event, or get tourist information for family and friends. Visitors to the Complex will be exposed to, and constantly reminded of, the unique and ever-changing environment in which they live.

Business leaders and industry staff will be busy attending meetings and industry trade seminars. Government personnel and the broad network of regional public and private agencies, who are constantly planning ways to improve upon the region’s resources, will also use the facilities of the Complex.

Large and small-scale banquet and social facilities will meet the rising demand for quality social space within the region.The main hall will cater up to 650 people and provide a unique lakefront setting, an ambiance of the diverse and human heritage of the region, and hospitality services that are second to none.


Capital Funding

This $4.8 million dollar facility will become a reality through local fundraising, industry donations, local and regional government debentures, and provincial government grants.
